The moving story of a nurse who adopted the baby she took care of for months at the ICU

Blaze was born with a congenital heart defect. He went to the operating room only three days after birth and, again, at eight months. And there is still a third operation, between three and five years.

Angela Farnan worked as a nurse at the ICU of the Illinois Hospital (USA) where the little boy was when Braze's mother asked her to take him between the two operations because he lived far away and could not take care of him at home as he needed.

The day of your second surgery, Blaze's mother asked the nurse if she and her husband would officially adopt her son. They did not doubt it. Today the little one has parents who love him and laugh happily.

Always wanted to be a mother

Angela Farnan has worked as a nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the Center for Congenital Heart Diseases at the Children's Hospital of OSF in Peoria, Illinois (USA) for 32 years.

When he met Blaze's mother, who was born with congenital heart disease, he quickly became his family. Blaze's mother did not live near the hospital, she could not pay for all the care she needed at home, nor take care of him with the total dedication required by her medical condition. So he asked his most trusted person in the hospital, his nurse, if he could take care of him.

Angela and Rick, her husband, took Blaze to her house and provided the intensive care she needed. But on the day of her second surgery (March 2018), Blaze's mother asked Farnan if she and her husband would consider officially adopting their son. So the mother nurse tells the moment:

"He made a tough decision asking us if we would be willing to stay with him permanently. It was an emotional moment, she was crying. Inside we were exultant and sad at the same time because this mother felt lost."

Rick acknowledges that they had already fallen in love with Blaze and that they did not hesitate to adopt him.

The small He has recovered and now walks and rides a bicycle, and has a family that loves him. But he was not the only one who benefited from the adoption.

Angela always wanted to have children, but when she married Rick eleven years ago she discovered that she couldn't get pregnant. Although it ensures that She felt like a mother, because she had her children from the pediatric ICU.

"When someone asks me how many children I have, I tell them it depends on the day. Sometimes 15 or 20. I have been working in PICU for a long time, and in my heart, I know that is where God wants me to be. Working here is hard , you can have heartbreaking cases. I always stay. I stay for the children. "

A happy family

Angela gets excited when OSF Health Care asks how she feels when she is a mother:

"I go to bed every night and I thank God for the opportunity to be a mother. I pray for Blaze every night. He's really a blessing. There are times when I wake up and I'm surprised to have him."

He even says that returning home after a stressful day at work has changed. Many mothers will identify with these words (at least that is the case in my case).

"I used to get home and would need half an hour to disconnect. Now, I get home and he is so excited to see me, it makes me forget everything. I don't need that half an hour anymore. I just need that face and that smile. I can have the worst day and all I want to do is go back home and see it. It makes everything better. "
