Diaper operation v.2: sphincter control (I)

When summer arrives, in addition to the bikini operation, carried out by some dads and moms, another operation is usually carried out in children in Spain (and I imagine that in other countries): diaper operation.

It is not that summer is the time to try to remove the diaper to children, it can be done at any time of the year, but as it is in summer when they wear less clothes, when they can even go naked at home and that is when having vacations, more time we are with them, it is usually a good time to carry out this operation.

I have titled the entry “diaper operation v.2” because this summer, in my house, we will carry out the operation for the second time since last year, having our son 2 and a half years old, we tried but understood that he was not ready yet .

How did we know I wasn't prepared

Simple. He made no mention of wanting to pee or poop. Not even when he had done so, did he warn of it.

Yes, he retained the urine without problems (for more than a year he has not wet the diaper at night), but he did not leave it to go to the potty. He pooped continuously in his underpants and when you offered him the possibility of doing so in the potty he seemed to hide.

All this is what we got after almost a month, so we concluded that it was not the time and the maxim that a pediatrician once told me: Sphincter control is not learned.

Do not you learn?

Once I read in a table of recommendations to remove the diaper that teaching how to control the sphincters could be, in some cases, a matter of several months.

Of course - I thought - and if you start at 8 months it can be a matter of years.
Sphincter control is a matter of maturation such as walking or speaking and in the same way that there is no possibility of teaching walking or teaching to speak (based on training, I mean) you cannot teach to control the sphincters

And if you don't learn why are we going to carry out the diaper operation v.2?

Good question. Because in September the school starts and, showing an incredible lack of adaptability with children and a great lack of respect towards their learning rhythmsAt school, children cannot wear a diaper.

It is not that at school it is considered that they should have already learned to control sphincters, but that one or two professionals have to take care of more than twenty children and the simplest way to treat them is by matching their routines so that everyone does the same at the same time and to be as self-sufficient as possible.

Luckily I have already heard of a school or teacher that does respect the maturation process and does not put any impediment to children going to school with a diaper.

In others (I would say ours is one of them), they recommend that the child always carry a mute because “you know that although they control very well (I think the director only lacked to wink) they usually escape because the school is an important novelty ”.

I guess I don't need to say that if my son did not go to school this year the diaper operation v.2 would not be carried out.

Tomorrow I will continue with the entrance explaining when the children are really capable of controlling the sphincters and what can we do to help them a little in the process if we want to force the situation for some reason (the entrance to the colebasically).
