Dangers of smoking after the 15th week of pregnancy

New research results in harm of smoking during pregnancy, especially if smoking continues after week 15 of pregnancy.

The most likely dangers to which the pregnant smoker is exposed are premature birth or a smaller than normal infant.

In this study, 2,500 pregnant New Zealand and Australian women who were in the fifteenth week of pregnancy participated. These were divided into three groups: non-smokers, those who had quit smoking before the fifteenth week and smokers.

The results showed that, regarding the preterm birth rate, there were no significant differences between those who had quit smoking before the fifteenth week of pregnancy and those who did not smoke.

On the other hand, this risk was more notable in the case of smokers, and the same happened with the size of newborns, smaller in the case of smokers.

Another of the conclusions of the study is that smokers were identified with a profile that made them more likely to be single mothers, with less training, unemployed, well above or below their ideal weight and more likely to abuse alcohol.

The study has been published in the "British Medical Journal" and conducted by researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

In any case, as we always remember, it will be better than let's quit smoking since we started thinking about the idea of conceiving a baby.
