Book "Normal Birth Initiative": the Federation of Midwives for a more natural birth

The Federation of Midwives of Spain (FAME) has prepared together with the Women's Observatory of the Ministry of Health (within its normal delivery care strategy) the Book Normal Birth Initiative.

This work defends actions that preserve the role of women when giving birth and increase the quality of childbirth care in health institutions. We can check the book online and see how it contains an excerpt from the latest WHO recommendations on deliveries with low medical intervention.

And, among other issues, point the need reduce the high caesarean section rate of some centers and improve the satisfaction and quality of the perception of the birth of the users.

In "Normal Birth Initiative" aspects such as freedom of movement in childbirth, the convenience of respecting rhythms and schedules, the use of unjustified maneuvers such as fasting, shaving… It also talks about the use of other pain relief methods apart from epidural anesthesia, or the physical space in which the birth takes place, the different positions that the mother can adopt in the expulsive phase…

In short, it is about highlighting that childbirth is a physiological and normal act and only in specific cases would they require intervention.

Begoña Gil, president of the Association of Midwives of Castilla y León, answers 5 questions in the newspaper 20 minutes that show the spirit that moves this Association and that has led them to publish this book, among other actions:

- What is intended? Reduce medical intervention when there are no risks to make a more human birth and it is the mother who decides. - And what is needed? Sensitize midwives and explain to people that there is another mode of delivery without pain. - And money? Well, especially more midwives, because this type of birth is slower. - Are we late? With the United Kingdom 20 years, but I am sure that it will gradually apply. In Cantabria it already works. - And return to childbirth at home? You have to wait to see if it is feasible. In England they do, but with a lot of medical control.

Much remains to be done on this path towards a more normal, natural or humanized birth, but little by little progress is being achieved.
