Beware of solar erythema

We are at the right time to enjoy the sun and the beach, but there are many risks for the baby and we must be very careful. One of them is the solar erythema, an inflammation that occurs when there is excessive sun exposure.

Children have a skin that absorbs more sunlight than an adult and this is because the production of melanin (pigment that protects the skin causing the famous tan) is much slower and more expensive than in an adult.

It is very important to protect children from the sun's rays especially in their first years of life, they must be protected with antisolar products suitable for them and also wear clothing, since the clothing effectively protects from sunlight, t-shirts, hats , shorts, parasols, etc. If the child has a solar erythema, we will see that some red spots appear in the areas of exposure to the sun's rays, it also has an itchy sensation. Depending on the exposure time, the severity presented will be greater, even fluid-filled blisters may appear that are accompanied by intense pain.

The test that is usually performed to verify the existence of a possible erythema, is to stretch the child's skin between the fingers, if it turns white it will signal that there is a solar erythema.

In any case, the first thing we should do is to stop the child from sunbathing and depending on the severity of the erythema, if only the area has reddened, it can be remedied with compresses of cold water with bicarbonate, although as we always say, It is preferable to see a doctor to prescribe the appropriate treatment.
