Sport and pregnancy: solving frequent doubts

We know that the exercise is important at all times of life, in pregnancy it is also so long as it is not contraindicated for any medical reason.

Sport can positively influence childbirth. The advantages they are: slightly shorter pregnancies (5 days less than average), a period of dilation also shorter and a lower incidence of surgical deliveries and fetal suffering during labor. But these benefits are enjoyed by women who were already athletes before pregnancy, and not previously sedentary.

This does not mean that it is not worth exercising during pregnancy because it gives us a greater sense of well-being, more self-confidence, a greater capacity for physical and emotional reaction, and an improvement in physical endurance. We must be moderate in exercise and never compromise the well-being of the fetus because it is known that performing physical overexertions on a regular basis during pregnancy can have an increased risk of prematurity, fetal malformations and intrauterine growth retardation.

To know what our limit is, experts recommend the "talk test": if we cannot have a conversation normally while doing an exercise, we must lower the intensity until we can do it effortlessly.

It is said that pregnant women have more chances of injury and this is true because hormonal changes lead to a general increase in the laxity of their ligaments that predisposes to suffer more easily traumas and sprains.

What is false is that physical exercise can compromise the supply of oxygen to the fetus or fetal development. And it has not been shown so far that it favors contractions. In this sense, we can be calm.
